The ASEAN Free Trade Area (AFTA) was established in 1992 to eliminate tariff barriers among Southeast Asian countries, aiming to integrate the region’s economies into a single production base and create a vast regional market. The AFTA includes the following ten member economies: Brunei Darussalam, Cambodia, Indonesia, Laos, Malaysia, Myanmar, the Philippines, Singapore, Thailand, and Vietnam. Through the Common Effective Preferential Tariff (CEPT) Scheme, tariffs on most goods traded within ASEAN have been reduced to no more than five percent or eliminated altogether, making intra-ASEAN trade more efficient and fostering economic growth.
